An ABN is not a shortcut to a car. What the entitlement rule requires, what a business-purpose declaration means, and the route for a real side business.
Quick Answer
No, you cannot get an ABN just to buy a car, because you are only entitled to one if you are carrying on or starting an enterprise. Finance is a separate test. If the car is really personal, a personal car loan is the straight route. If the business is real, our ABN car loan page covers the business route.
Can you get an ABN just to buy a car?
No, not if buying the car is the only reason for the ABN. You can only hold an ABN if you are entitled to one, and that depends on an enterprise, not on the car you want. A salesperson suggesting you set one up for a better price does not change that.
Most people asking this have heard that an ABN unlocks a cheaper car, an easier loan or a GST credit. Whether ABN car deals are real is its own question. This post deals with the one underneath it: whether the ABN should exist at all.
Two separate tests sit inside that question. The first is whether you are entitled to the ABN, which the Australian Business Register (ABR) decides. The second is whether the credit is mainly for business, which is what a business-purpose declaration states. Meeting one does not settle the other, and a lot of confusion online comes from treating them as a single rule.
Who is entitled to an ABN?
You are entitled to an ABN if you are carrying on or starting an enterprise in Australia, making supplies connected with the indirect tax zone, or a Corporations Act company. That wording comes from the ABR entitlement page (modified 29 February 2024, read 4 November 2026).
There is no single test for a business. The features the ABR lists include a significant commercial activity, an intention to make a profit, repetition, and being run in a business-like way with records.
What does not make you entitled?
Two common situations fall outside the rule. You are not entitled to an ABN for work you carry out as an employee, according to the ABR. You are also not eligible for an ABN for a hobby, according to business.gov.au (no page date shown, read 4 November 2026).
Registering for an ABN is free on business.gov.au (no page date shown, read 4 November 2026), so cost is never the check. Entitlement is the check, and the ABR says you may be subject to an entitlement review at any time.
What counts as really starting a business?
The ABR looks for commencement activities, and it expects you to have done at least some of them and to give evidence if asked. These are the examples it lists.
| Activity | What it shows |
|---|---|
| Advertising, a website or a social media account | You are offering something to customers. |
| Business cards or stationery | You are presenting the business to customers. |
| Business licences or insurance | You are preparing to operate. |
| Leasing or buying premises, equipment or stock | You are setting up to trade. |
| Issuing quotes or bidding for work | You are pricing work for real customers. |
| Consulting advisers | You are taking advice on setting up. |
| Applying for finance | You are funding the activity. The ABR still expects at least some activities and evidence. |
| Buying a business | You are taking on an operation that already exists. |

Applying for finance is on that list, which is where people get tripped up. The line does not stand on its own. The ABR expects at least some activities and evidence, so read the list as a whole and be ready to show what you have done.
Where this commonly lands is someone with a genuine idea and nothing on paper yet. The fix is to do the work first and keep the proof: the quote you sent, the insurance schedule, the adviser's invoice. Whether all of that adds up to carrying on an enterprise is a question for your accountant.
What does a business-purpose declaration mean on car finance?
A business-purpose declaration is a statement, which may be signed before the contract, that the credit is mainly for business. It matters because of what it does to your consumer protection.
The National Credit Code applies where credit is mainly for personal, domestic or household purposes, and not where more than half is for business. That is how the Law Handbook from the Legal Services Commission of South Australia explains it (revised 21 May 2025, read 4 November 2026). ASIC guidance on whether the credit legislation applies uses the same predominantly personal test (INFO 101, reissued October 2020, read 4 November 2026).
| Purpose of the credit | National Credit Code | What you give up or keep |
|---|---|---|
| Credit mainly for business | Does not apply where more than half is for business. | You sit outside the Code, and the declaration must warn that its protection may be lost by signing. |
| Credit mainly personal | Applies where credit is mainly for personal, domestic or household purposes. | You keep the Code. A declaration is ineffective if the credit provider knew it was not true, and legal guidance also asks whether it had reason to believe so. |

Notice what the test looks at. It looks at purpose. Holding an ABN does not change what the car is for.
The Law Handbook names a motor vehicle used partly for business and partly privately as a common example of the difficulty. Where this commonly lands in a real conversation is exactly there, so work out honestly what the car will do before anyone asks you to sign.
What goes wrong if the car is really personal?
If the car is really personal, the problems sit in three places: the ABN, the GST and the declaration.
- The ABN. When you apply you declare the information is true and correct, and a false statement can attract a penalty, based on your behaviour (modified 5 July 2019, read 4 November 2026). The ABR also warns you may face prosecution or criminal charges if you apply for an ABN, register for GST and claim GST refunds when not entitled (modified 15 October 2025, read 4 November 2026). If it finds you are not entitled it will cancel the ABN, and it is an offence to use your ABN when it has been cancelled (modified 29 January 2024, read 4 November 2026).
- The GST. If you buy with an ABN, GST credits need GST registration, a tax invoice and business use, according to the ATO (updated 3 June 2026, read 4 November 2026).
- The declaration. Signing one may cost you the protection of the Code, and it is ineffective if the credit provider knew it was not true or, on legal guidance, had reason to believe so.
A tax deduction is a separate question again, and one for your accountant. The ABN does not settle it.
If the car is personal, Moneysmart on car loans is the place to start (updated 24 June 2026, read 4 November 2026). If a lender has already said no, an ABN set up for the purpose does not fix the reason, so read what to do after an ABN car loan is declined. And if rent to own is being pitched to you because you hold an ABN, work out the full cost of rent to own on an ABN before you sign anything.
What if you are starting a real side business?
If the side business is real, start the business first and let the car finance follow it. The order matters more than the speed.
- Test the activity. Ask your accountant whether what you are doing counts as carrying on an enterprise, and whether it should run as a sole trader or something else. Sole trader or company on vehicle finance covers how that choice reads to a lender.
- Do the commencement activities. Quote the work, sort the insurance, take the advice, and keep the evidence.
- Apply for the ABN accurately. Describe the business as it is. It is free.
- Work out the car's job. Be realistic about how much of its use is business, because that is what a declaration of credit mainly for business rests on.
- Then look at finance. Our ABN car loan guide covers requirements, documents and new ABNs, and the Business Owners Hub covers the wider picture.
What does a lender check on a new ABN?
A lender reads a new ABN as a story that has to hang together: the registration, the activity behind it and the reason for the car. What it will accept, and how much trading history it wants, varies by lender. A low doc car loan on an ABN is one route some lenders offer, and whether a new ABN fits it also varies by lender.
Moves faster
- ABN details match the work you actually do
- Quotes, insurance or adviser invoices on hand
- A clear reason the business needs this car
- A realistic split of business and private use
Moves slower
- An ABN registered days before the car enquiry
- No evidence of any activity behind it
- A car that does not fit the stated work
- Answers on use that change between conversations
None of those lines is a rule. They are the things that make a file easier or harder to read. A broker can tell you where yours sits before an application is made.
Whether you can get an ABN to buy a car comes down to two tests that are easy to blur. Entitlement asks whether you are carrying on or starting an enterprise. The business-purpose test asks whether the credit is mainly for business. If the car is really personal, neither test helps you. If the side business is real, do the commencement activities first and the finance gets easier to explain.
Key takeaway: settle whether the business is real before you think about the car, because the ABN and the declaration both depend on it.Frequently Asked Questions
You can use your ABN to buy a car when the car is for a business you are actually carrying on and the purchase belongs to that business. The ABN on its own does not turn a personal car into a business one. The steps are in how to buy a car with an ABN.
You can get an ABN for free, but the fee was never the test. You must be entitled to an ABN first, which means carrying on or starting an enterprise. If the car is the only reason for applying, being free does not help.
Buying a car on an ABN for personal use runs against both tests. An ABN needs an enterprise, and a business-purpose declaration says the credit is mainly for business. If the use is mainly personal, a personal car loan is the straight route. The same choice on a work vehicle is covered in business or personal loan for a ute.
You can only use an old ABN if it is still active and you are still entitled to it. The ABR says an ABN may be cancelled as inactive if you have not reported business income or your lodgments are not up to date. It is an offence to use your ABN when it has been cancelled, so check its status and whether the enterprise is still running first.
You do not need an ABN to get a car loan for a personal car. Moneysmart explains personal car loans (updated 24 June 2026, read 4 November 2026). An ABN only comes into it when the finance is for a business, such as a chattel mortgage.
